When somebody died, it always felt impactful and significant. The characters felt important rather than just being add-ons. Everything feels so dirty in this game and I absolutely loved that. Everything about the world was beautifully crafted to give the atmosphere a dark and grimy feel. Recommended.Īfter stewing on it for about a week after I finished the game, I think the best way to summarize my thoughts on Metro 2033 is a mixture of both enthralling and disappointing. Another weak point is the game's linear structure and the lack of significant weapon choice, but then again, in a post-apocalyptic world, you would not expect much choice anyway. The need for survival will in most cases send the player in one direction. The game tries to provide for some moral choices, but that is one area where it falls short. I completed the game with the normal ranger ending, although another one exists. At higher difficulty mod, ammunition management is also required. At normal level ammunition is plentiful, but even here you must stock up on gas-mask filters to survive for long enough sections of the overground and the underground.
Sound, music and voice acting are all top-notch, and the action is well measured and requires smart choices of stand, fight or flee strategies. There are also dreamlike sections where the player must fight off psychic attacks from the dark ones. The player must negotiate not just the monstrous mutants, but the human factions that adopted Stalinist and Nazis philosophies. With the help of the novel, it also gives a realistic scenario for extremism and desperation that can come after a nuclear distraction. The game succeeds very well in capturing the atmosphere of a claustrophobic world underground and the desolation outside. After the station is attacked by a mutant race called the dark ones, you are sent to deliver a message across the wasteland to another commander, and eventually, help decide the faith of the dark ones by your actions. In the game, you are one of those survivors and the adopted son of the station commander. Metro 2033 Redux is a competent first-person shooter based on Dmitry Glukhovsky's novel of the same name, where survivors of a nuclear war have taken refuge in the Metro tunnels of Moscow.
